Tooth Extraction

Tooth extraction is a common dental procedure to remove a tooth that is damaged, decayed, or causing crowding. While it may sound intimidating, extractions are usually quick and performed under anesthesia to minimize discomfort.
When Is a Tooth Extraction Needed?

Common reasons for extraction include:

  • Severe tooth decay or infection
  • Advanced gum disease
  • Broken teeth that can’t be restored
  • Impacted wisdom teeth
  • Preparing for orthodontic treatment

What to Expect During the Procedure

  1. Numbing the Area: Local anesthesia is used to ensure you don’t feel pain.
  2. Tooth Removal: The dentist gently rocks the tooth to loosen it, then removes it.
  3. Stitches (if needed): Sometimes stitches are placed to help the area heal.

Aftercare Instructions

To help your mouth heal properly:

1. Bite down gently on gauze for 30–45 minutes
2. Avoid drinking through straws or spitting forcefully
3. Eat soft foods for the first 24–48 hours
4. Use a cold compress to reduce swelling
5. Take prescribed medications as directed
